Most students of the Bible lack sufficient knowledge of its original languages to effectively study it as written. We rely on translations into our native language, and in so doing, become unwitting victims of the inherent shortcomings of any translation from one language into another. In Word Studies in the New Testament, Marvin Vincent sets out to redress this problem through a careful study of the individual Greek words that make up the New Testament.

Though organized as a commentary, this book focuses on the kind of information that might normally be hidden away in a lexicon. And while it is built around the Greek words that make up our New Testament, it makes a conscious attempt to allow the reader who is unfamiliar with Greek to get the full benefit of its scholarship. The goal is to give the average reader of the Bible the opportunity to appreciate the New Testament in the same way a native or skilled speaker of the language would.

To that end, when Greek words are presented, they are always followed by their English translation. Vincent contemplated excluding the Greek entirely, but in the end determined that those who have had at least some exposure to Greek (including those who "have saved a little Greek out of the wreck of their studies") might benefit from seeing the original words. Those who know little or nothing of the language, however, are his true target audience.

An introduction to each book of the New Testament is included, followed by detailed verse-by-verse, word-by-word dissection of the text.

About the Author(s)

Marvin Richardson Vincent (1834-1922) was a Presbyterian minister and New Testament Bible scholar.

Vincent graduated from Columbia University in 1851. He became a professor of Latin at the Methodist University, Troy, NY in 1856. In 1863 he switched from Methodist to Presbyterian and pastored the First Church of Troy (Troy, NY, 1863-73); the Church of the Covenant (New York City, NY, 1873-88); then Presbyterian Church of the Covenant (New York City, 1888-?).

Vincent joined Union Theological Seminary in 1885 as a professor of New Testament exegesis and criticism. He was a prolific writer, known primarily for Word Studies in the New Testament.
