Description

The Tree of Life Version (TLV) speaks with a decidedly Jewish-friendly voice — a voice like the Bible authors themselves — to recover the authentic context of the Bible and the Christian faith. Jesus' death and resurrection were not the beginning of a new religion but the fulfillment of the covenant God made with His chosen and called-out people. Yet most Bible translations lose the connection to the Jewish nature of the Bible. As a result, biblical books that were written to Jews, for Jews, and about Jews lose a critical element — their actual Jewish essence.

The TLV is a new Bible translation, produced by Messianic Jewish and Christian scholars, which highlights the rich Hebrew roots of the Christian faith. Discover the rich meaning of the Bible with this faithful new translation that is accurate, readable, reverential, and true to the Hebrew roots of the Christian faith.

Included with the TLV is the TLV Glossary of Hebrew Words and Terms to define transliterated Hebrew words that appear in the TLV. Studying the terms in the glossary will help you understand the vocabulary this Bible uses and introduce you to terms often used by Jewish believers in Messianic gatherings.

Key Principles Observed While Translating the Tree of Life Version of the Bible

  • Restoring the Jewish Name of Messiah: Messiah Yeshua.
  • Restoring the reverence for the four letter unspoken name of God: YHWH will be translated Adonai.
  • Restoring the clarity of the difference between the creator and the creation: All pronouns referring to deity will be capitalized.
  • Restoring the sacrificial death of Messiah Yeshua to the Torah from which the Good News unfolds.
  • Restoring more universal Hebrew terminology previously overlooked in most translations, eg: shalom, halleluyah, amen, matzah, shofar. Hebrew terminology is defined in the included TLV Glossary of Hebrew Words and Terms.
  • Adding, with the use of italicizing, on a very limited basis, lesser known Hebrew terms to help the reader better understand some of the lost intent of the original manuscripts.
  • Restoring a few key names in the biblical text to a more Hebraic expression to add clarity and reconnect Messiah to His Jewish family.
  • Clear up confusing language when referring to people not born Jewish in the text: Use of Gentile, pagan, nations.
  • Clear up confusion between misunderstandings about intent when referring to the terms synagogue and church.
  • Clear up the confusion about distinct groups of Jewish people in the New Testament.
  • Clear up confusion about the terminology of law: Torah will be used only for the laws fo the five books of Moses.
  • Restoring the earlier work of translators by providing new terms for words whose meaning has become altered by changes in language over the centuries, eg: emissaries instead of "apostles", kedoshim instead of "saints".
  • Restoring the Jewish order to the books of the Old Testament.
  • Focusing upon the principle of gender equality, not gender neutrality: increase understanding without straying from an accurate interpretation of the actual biblical language.
