Description

The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible provides a theologically conservative and balanced system of notes and articles that trace the Reformed Christian heritage back to its roots in the Reformation. Appropriate for both an academic and an informed lay audience, this study Bible incorporates extensive notes, as well as articles and charts, that comment on Scripture from a distinctly Reformed perspective.

Also included in the appendix of the Study Bible is the complete text of each of the six major Reformed doctrinal standards (i.e. Heidelburg Catechism, Belgic Confession, Canons of Dort and Westminster Standards).

Features

  • 20,000 study notes covering the Old Testament and New Testament
  • 66 articles covering tenets significant to reformed theology (i.e. Definite Atonement: For Whom Did Jesus Die?, Evangelism: Why Should We Preach the Gospel?, Predestination and Foreknowledge: Are People Predestined to Heaven and Hell?, The Perseverance and Preservation of Believers: Can I Lose My Salvation?)
  • Section and book introductions for every book in the Bible
  • Complete text of the Doctrinal standards of the Reformed Faith:
    • Heidelberg Catechism
    • Westminster Confession
    • Westminster Shorter Catechism
    • Belgic Confession
    • Canons of Dort
    • Westminster Larger Catechism
  • Based on the New International Version Bible but can be used profitably with any translation

From the Introduction

"The Spirit of the Reformation Study Bible reflects three central convictions that have guided this effort. First, we look back to the Protestant Reformation of the 16th century as a momentous work of the Holy Spirit in the church. At a time when the church had fallen into many serious false teachings and practices, the Protestant Reformers reaffirmed the authority and clarity of the Bible. This work of God's Spirit returned the people to the central truths of genuine Christian faith. For this reason this study Bible draws attention to classical expressions of Reformed theology by including in its appendices the full texts of several early confessions and catechisms...

Second, we recognize that the Holy Spirit has continued to bring reformation to the church. Through the Spirit's illumination many helpful insights into Scripture have come to be widely endorsed by those who have remained faithful to the central doctrinal perspectives of Reformed theology. In line with the claim that "the Reformed church is always reforming," this study Bible reflects many of these developments.

Third, it is our firm conviction that the Holy Spirit continues to reform the church today as his people devote themselves to faithful study and application of the Scriptures to all areas of life. For this reason, this study Bible has been designed to aid church leaders and lay people in their reading of the Word of God. Attention has been given to the historical backgrounds, major theological themes, and literary qualities of each book of the Bible. This information not only guides readers toward an understanding of the original meaning of each portion of Scripture, but also points out ways in which the Scriptures are relevant for Christian life today."
