About the Author(s)

Nicholas Herman, known as Brother Lawrence (born 1605 Lorraine, France - died Feb. 12, 1691, Paris, France). After 50 years of age, Herman entered into the Carmelite monastery in Paris where he died. He spent most of his life doing menial tasks to the glory of God in a monastery, such as serving in the kitchen, and writing about his love for the Lord, both of which have been captured in his famous The Practice of the Presence of God. Early on, he spent many years as a soldier and then as a footman—"an awkward fellow who broke everything." His last words were "I am doing what I shall do, through all eternity--blessing God, praising God, adoring God, giving Him the love of my whole heart. It is our one business, my brethren, to worship Him and love Him, without thought of anything else."
