These sermon starters are compilations of selected lectionary-style outlines previously published in Pulpit Helps Magazine, a publication used by over 200,000 pastors and teachers of the Bible. Each of the four volumes contain 52 outlines written to meet the need of those who follow the lectionary system. The information provided is as relevant and applicable today as when it was first published, espousing the timeless truths of God's Word. The Ineffectiveness of the Law to Save or Sanctify

Key Verse: Ga 2:16

I. The Jews Considered the Gentiles to Be Sinners While Exempting Themselves from Such Condemnation

A.Paul rejects such a principle. No one can claim righteousness merely because of ancestry, even Jewish (Ro 2:1-3,17).
B.Because the Jews had been given the Law, their sinfulness became even more evident (Ro 7:7-12).
C.The Jews needed to believe on the Lord Jesus for forgiveness of their sins just as much as the Gentiles. In Ga 2:15 Paul refers to this fact, “We being Jews by nature and not sinners from among the Gentiles” (author's translation), meaning that they were sinners as well as the Gentiles.

II. Both Jews and Gentiles Are Justified by Faith in Jesus Christ

A.Paul emphasizes three times in Ga 2:16 that it is not “by the works of the law” that we are justified before God.
B.This verse begins with the participle eidótes, “knowing.” Oída, from which eidótes is derived, refers to instinctive, intuitive knowledge. No one has to teach us that we are unacceptable to God (Jas 5:6). Because of His justice, God cannot be a respecter of persons. He judges all equally by His law (Ac 10:34; Ro 2:11; Ep 6:9; Col 3:25; Jas 2:1).
C.Thus, both Jews and Gentiles as lawbreakers can be declared just only through faith in Jesus Christ (Ac 4:12; 16:30,31; Ro 5:9; 10:9).

III. Faith Is Not Only the Basis of Justification but of Sanctification as Well

A.The Judaizers had been teaching that after being justified by Christ, the believers must again put themselves under the Mosaic Law to achieve righteousness (Ga 2:17,18).
B.Paul argues that Christ is not a “minister of sin” (v. 17). In other words, He is not responsible for our continuing sin after we are justified by faith.
C.The answer to this dilemma is not to again put ourselves under the Law but to continue on in our new life of faith in Christ (Ga 2:20). His sacrifice has made the Law completely useless in achieving sanctification for the believer.
