Description

The Legacy Standard Bible is a direct update of the 1995 edition of the New American Standard Bible (NASB) and fundamentally endeavors to uphold it. The translators went back to the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek of every verse in order to double check its accuracy. Any changes made strictly revolved around providing greater consistency in word usage, accuracy in grammatical structure, and tightening phrasing. Sometimes these changes will incorporate what was found in the earlier NASB 1977 edition. However, if no update was needed, then the text was left as originally translated by the NASB 1995. Thus, as opposed to a brand new translation, the LSB is truly designed to be a legacy edition. It is a version that honors and upholds the NASB tradition, and endeavors to more fully implement its translation philosophy.

The LSB is a joint-venture product of The Lockman Foundation, Three Sixteen Publishing, and the John MacArthur Charitable Trust. The translation committee consists of a group of biblically qualified, faithful men from the Master's University and Seminary, all of whom are scholars and preachers. The translation also went through an extensive review process from a team that consists of scholars and pastors from all around the world.

As an update of the NASB, the LSB is a literal word-for-word translation. Particularly, it aims to be a window into the original text by having precision in two ways. First, it seeks to ensure that each word and phrase in English corresponds to each word and phrase in the original languages relative to meaning and grammar. Second, it also seeks to ensure that the same words and phrases correspond to each other within the translation as much as possible. This provides the reader confidence that the word or phrase they see in one place is indeed the same they see elsewhere. Because Bible translation and interpretation belongs in the context of the local church, the LSB does not shy away from being as literal as possible, trusting that the community of believers will be able to teach and explain the passages to one another (Acts 8:30-31).

Bundle Contents

Contains the following:

  • Legacy Standard Bible with Strong's Numbers
  • LSB Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek Dictionary

This edition of the LSB is augmented with Strong's numbers. Each significant English word is followed by a Hebrew or Greek word number corresponding to the original Hebrew or Greek word from which the English words was translated. This allows readers who are unfamiliar with the original Hebrew and Greek languages from which the English Bible was translated to access those words and gain additional insight into the English text.

The included dictionary shows the original language word corresponding to each word number and provides a phonetic pronunciation using English spelling. A brief definition is provided, along with a list of each English word used in the LSB to translate that word and an indication of how many times that word is translated using the given English word.

For convenience, the Hebrew-Aramaic and Greek dictionaries, which are sometimes packaged as separate PocketBible books, have been combined into a single volume. This makes it easier to jump between the Old and New Testament without having to switch dictionaries.

Since Strong's numbers are relatively standard across all the Bibles that include them (the exceptions generally being in the LSB and NASB), this edition of the LSB can be used with other dictionaries in PocketBible that are indexed by Strong's number. Similarly, other Bibles that include Strong's numbers can be used with the LSB dictionary in this package.
