Description
H. A. Ironside was one of the most well-known preachers of the early 20th century. He started his first Sunday School at age 11, averaging about 60 children and adults in attendance at each week. Lacking an adult teacher, young Henry took up the task himself. He went on to preach some 7000 sermons before over a million people before getting his first full-time preaching position at Moody Church in Chicago.
This collection of commentaries on 23 of the books of the Old Testament was compiled from sermons preached at Moody Church from 1928-1948, from lectures at Dallas Theological Seminary, and in some cases, while laboring among the Pueblo Indians.
Ironside described this work as "...intended for the instruction, not of theologians or scholars, but the masses" who attended his meetings or listened on the radio. They're considered a theological standard and have stood the test of time.

About the Author(s)
Henry Allen Ironside (1876-1951) was a Canadian–American Bible teacher, preacher, theologian, pastor and author who pastored Moody Church in Chicago from 1929 to 1948.
Though active in church and spreading the gospel as a child, Ironside reckoned his salvation from age 13 after a visit from evengelist Donald Munro.
He was involved with the Salvation Army in southern California as a teenager. His family moved to San Francisco when he was 20, where he joined a Plymouth Brethren church and met his wife, Helen Varley.
Ironside was a prolific writer. In 1914, he founded the Western Book and Tract Company. From 1916 to 1929, Ironside is said to have preached some 7,000 sermons to over one million listeners. In 1924, Ironside began preaching under the direction of the Moody Bible Institute.
In 1930, Ironside was invited to serve as pastor at Moody Church. He served there until 1948. He continued to preach throughout the US and abroad. In 1942, he became president of the missionary organization Africa Inland Mission.
Ironside earned an honorary Doctorate of Letters degree from Wheaton College in 1930 and an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree from Bob Jones University in 1942.
His wife Helen died on May 1, 1948 and Ironside resigned as pastor of Moody Church on May 30. He remarried in 1949.
Henry Ironside died on January 15, 1951 during a preaching tour of Brethren assemblies in New Zealand, and is buried in Auckland, New Zealand.
