Description

This New Testament commentary from William Godbey is unique in at least two respects. First, he wrote it "backwards" — beginning with the Revelation in volume 1, then three volumes on the epistles, one on Acts, and finishing with 2 volumes on the Gospels.

Second, Godbey first harmonized the four gospels, putting the life and ministry of Jesus in chronological order, then wrote his 2-volume commentary based on that ordering. We believe him to be the first to take this approach to the Gospels — an approach that many have taken since.

Godbey's own literal translation of the Greek text leads the commentary on each verse. When it differs from the more commonly read translations of his day he takes time to explain why with reference to the underlying Greek. Each verse reference is hyperlinked in PocketBible so that it works alongside any Bible you choose to read. And despite that fact that he tackled the composition of the commentary in reverse order of the books of the New Testament, it synchronizes as expected with your Bible as you read through it.

This is a 7-volume, verse-by-verse and often phrase-by-phrase commentary on the New Testament presented as a single volume in PocketBible for ease of use.

About the Author(s)

William B. Godbey (1833-1920) was one of the most significant evangelists in the early stages of the Wesleyan-holiness movement. He was born in Pulaski, Kentucky, and raised in the Methodist Church. In 1853, he was licensed by the Methodist Episcopal Church to preach and in 1868 attained full membership in the Kentucky Conference.

He was a prodigious author publishing more than 200 books and pamphlets on topics including doctrine, new religious movements, the Second Coming, and divine healing. He traveled extensively across the country and the world preaching the holiness message. He taught at God's Bible School in Cincinnati, Ohio and became known, in part, for his unconventional dress and personal lifestyle.
