Description

As far as Jesus and the New Testament writers were concerned, the Jewish Scriptures that Christians call the "Old Testament" were the Scriptures. For Jesus and the New Testament writers, they were a living resource for understanding God, God's ways in the world, and God's ways with us. They were "useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that the person who belongs to God can be proficient, equipped for every good work" (2Ti 3:16-17). They were for everyone, in fact. So it's strange that Christians don't read them very much.

John Goldingay's aim in these volumes is to help you change that. He takes you through the Old Testament a few verses at a time, first presenting his own translation of the passage, which sticks closer to the original Hebrew than most modern translations do, so that you can get a better idea precisely what the text says. His commentary follows, often including personal experience and anecdotes as a way to connect to the passage, then digging in to the details, citing other verses, providing historical and cultural background, and finding ways to make personal application.

Despite the author's scholarly credentials, this commentary is truly "for everyone". Everyone will find it readable, understandable, and profitable in their study of Scripture.

About the Author(s)

John Goldingay is David Allan Hubbard Professor of Old Testament at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California. An internationally respected Old Testament scholar, Goldingay is the author of many commentaries and books.
