Description

The formal statement of a system of beliefs has been an important part of the history of the church. A creed formalizes the belief system of a particular group of Christians. It serves to both systematically teach doctrine and to separate truth from error.

Their use is not without controversy; some would argue that the Bible is a sufficient statement of beliefs for the Christian. That being said, some of these statements were created before the New Testament canon was settled. Regardless, they implicitly (or often, explicitly) serve to address controversies of the day and in so doing help us see the evolution or formation of Christian thought on a subject over time and as such are worthy of study.

This collection of creeds and confessions spans 1500 years and includes over three dozen well-known and lesser-known documents.
