Description

Taking over 40 years to complete, Adam Clarke's commentary is perhaps the most important commentary produced in the Methodist/Wesleyan tradition. It was originally published in eight volumes over a two-decade period in the early 19th century, and is presented in PocketBible unabridged.

Like Wesley, Clarke objected to Calvinism. He held Arminian/Wesleyan positions regarding predestination, grace, justification, sanctification, and eternal security.

Lesser known of Clarke is that he actually translated the entire Bible himself, in addition to authoring this commentary. Clarke believed that the Bible "takes away the veil of darkness and ignorance." He was not afraid to challenge traditional understanding of a passage when he believed the original languages suggested otherwise.

About the Author(s)

Adam Clarke (1762-1832) was a British theologian and writer who was perhaps the greatest Methodist since Wesley. Clarke was converted in 1779 while praying in a field as a youth. He became a circuit-riding preacher in Wiltshire in 1782 and soon was all over England. He married Mary Cooke in 1788. Clarke served at such places as the Channel Islands, the Shetland Islands, and in London (c. 1805 on). He was president of the Methodist Conference three times, and also printed an Arabic Bible. His eight-volume Commentary on the Holy Bible (London, 1812–26) was the result of 40 years of labor. Clarke died of cholera/plague. When asked if he was trusting Christ as he died, he said, “I do! I do!” For a time he denied “the eternal Sonship” of Christ.
